Implementing the Five Year forward View
20th of September 2017
Royal Society of Medicine, London

As part of Govconnect’s ongoing commitment to provide vital information around population health improvement strategies related to the delivery of the NHS Forward View, and following on from our already established Dementia 2020and Early Years series of conferences. Govconnect are proud to announce the launch of Mental Health 2017 - Implementing the Five Year Forward View

Mental health problems represent the largest single cause of disability in the UK. The cost to the economy is estimated at £105 billion a year – roughly the cost of the entire NHS.

The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health has made an unarguable case for transforming mental health care in England, a single programme, but one which contains numerous different, related elements across the health system for all ages.

The independent report of the Mental Health Taskforce published in February 2016 set out the start of a 10 year roadmap for transformation based around feedback from over 20,000 people with mental health problems. With priorities focused on prevention, access, integration, quality and improved care experiences. It set out recommendations for NHS arms length bodies around parity of esteem between mental and physical health for children, young people, adults and older people. A renewed focus on the areas where wider action is needed, and provided a particular focus on tackling inequalities. This insight has been invaluable in shaping delivery over the coming years to 2020/21.

The viability of this blueprint is dependant on numerous delivery agents working together in implementing shared objectives and highlights the validity and timing of this conference.

Implementing the Five Year Forward View published in mid 2016 was a welcomed and timely roadmap. This Five Year Forward View for Mental Health is underpinned by significant additional funding. Our conference will seek to set out in detail where and when this money will become available as well as highlighting the support available to localities over the coming years.

In addition the conference will outline the expectations of the NHS and others, and will also seek to set out how national partners must work together in ensuring they provide the right enabling structures and frameworks to progress.

The ambition for an additional one million people to be in receipt of high-quality care by 2020/21 is a decisive and unprecedented step towards closing the treatment gap for mental health, which can only be achieved through the promotion of evidence based best practice and transference of knowledge amongst all NHS settings.

Our conference will seek to ensure that the foundations for implementing the five year forward view for mental health are in place with a view to benefitting people of all ages, reflecting the specific needs of all groups from children and young people through to older people.

The aim to improve mental health and wellbeing cannot solely be achieved by the NHS, and must be delivered in partnership with other local organisations including local government, housing, education, employment and the voluntary sector.

Through our conference and the accompanying pre & post conference debates & online resource we will seek to provide a shared understanding for the above sectors and all delegates as to how this can best be achieved.

This conference will outline the core elements of the implementation and will review and assess the actions for each of the key objectives.
